Former Georgia State and Cobb County Board of Education Chairman Appointed to the State Charter Schools Commission Board of Commissioners on February 21, 2025.

ATLANTA, GA – The State Charter Schools Commission of Georgia (SCSC) is pleased to welcome Scott Sweeney as its newest commissioner, after his nomination by Governor Brian Kemp. Commissioner Sweeney will serve a four-year term on the SCSC Board of Commissioners (Board) from 2025 to 2029. He replaces Commissioner Jim Cole, whose term ended in January 2025.

Commissioner Sweeney has extensive experience in education governance and policy. He served on the Georgia State Board of Education from 2019 to 2025, representing the 6th and 11th Congressional Districts, and held the role of Chairman during his tenure. Prior to that, he served for eight years as an elected member of the Cobb County Board of Education, including a term as Board Chair. 

Beyond his service on education boards, Commissioner Sweeney has a strong background in business strategy and leadership. He is currently a Senior Business Advisor for InPrime Legal, a Georgia-based business law firm recognized as a 2019 Small Business ROCK STAR by the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Georgia Economic Developers Association.
